Snow Snow Snow
So far I (mostly) love the winter in Oregon. It has been bitter cold but I had my first snow day last week and it was magical outside! There was weather warnings and all but to be honest, I didn’t pay any attention. Then, out of nowhere – BAM everything was white! I finished up early at work and headed home where there was an eggnog and snack party going on – love that! Everything froze over that night so it was another work from home day on Friday but everything was sooooo pretty!
What I do not like so far about the winter here is that when it snows, pretty much everything stops., well in Portland anyways. The roads and drivers are out of control and there are delays EVERYWHERE! It took me 2 hrs to get home yesterday, which normally only takes 25mins and for other people it was up to 6hrs!
Snowboarding at Skibowl
On Sunday, myself and Korey decided to head off up to the mountain to try out our snowboards. We went to Skibowl out on Mount Hood which is only about 40 minutes from Portland. As we started going further and further up the mountain, the snowier and more wilder it got. There’s no way in hell I would have been able to drive in it but we managed to get there (and back!) in on piece!
At Skibowl, I had to rent and buy a few pieces. I was able to rent snow pants for $17, snowboarding boots for $20 and bought the goggles and gloves in the ski store. Tickets for the day pass are $50 (11am-7pm). Since this was my first time snowboarding, we tried out the bunny slope first. After going down this once (well falling on my arse mostly) I decided it was time to go to the bigger hill. So off we went to the ski lift! It was amazing up there and I was completely gobsmacked by how insane the scenery was. Everything is just a blanket of white with smacks of green, so amazing!
While I was oggling everything, Korey was giving me a quick run down on how to jump off. Why I thought the lift was going to stop for me I don’t know…. BUT I managed not to fall so I immediately thought I was born to do this and could in fact be a natural. A natural I was not. I fell going down that hill, head first, more times than I can count. Of course himself flew down no problem, with little experience ever snowboarding! My body was in dyer ways by the time I got to the bottom. My ego was shattered and I thought there was a strong chance I’d have to be airlifted home. (The last part is a little bit dramatic but the rest was pretty accurate!). I loved it all the same though and didn’t give up. 🙂
The most embarrassing part I think of the day was when Korey was going up the lift and saw me going down the slope. He had perfect view of what I was at. And sure enough I took another tumble the wild cat and landed on my head, legs in the air flying attached to the board. He said it was hilarious at first but then I kind of just laid there for a sec. Myself, I remember just thinking if I could slide the rest of the way down on my back, that would be great… 😀
It’ll probably be February by the time I get the chance to go again but I honestly can’t wait. I’m still sore after everything but it’s easily forgotten when you’re up the side of a mountain! This definitely trumps Irelands wet winters so I am happy to stay. 😀
